After this review, I think no one can say I only listen to classical and rock music or that I am some sort of elitist who doesn't get other sounds.
I won't say I totally understand everything that is about Linus, but he is different both in style and performance and types of songs he does. He does a lot of originals, in fact from what I know it's nearly all originals. He has 5 RL albums under his belt.
His music has a bit of goth feel to it, but it's by no means goth. There are definitely lighter rockesque tunes in his arsenal of songs. And at times I am almost hear a rather folksy feel in his music, but with a much darker undertone. His much more somber speaking voice, deadpan, adds to the whole feel of the concert, very real, very genuine. A wonderful sound to enjoy that is dark enough just to give me the feeling of realism, but not so dark where I want to just slit my throat.
Linus opened today's concert with his song Burbank, a pretty dark song that definitely have a goth feel to it. But not so far into goth so that most general audience could still enjoy it. And I know I have been going on and on about singers who are out of tune, well here I think Linus is deliberately making some interesting sounds that is just slightly off, along with some of the awkwardness of the rhythm that was fascinating to hear and I can hear how it can groove and where it's coming from within him.
His second song Mating of the Souls is a bit lighter then his first. But his voice kinda echoes a little bit of Radiohead's lead singer, just a smigen. The best part of his music is that he makes bode choices. The songs would simply shift gears in the middle back and forth between different ideas. It's different but it's very refreshing.
The third song, which I missed the title of, has almost a celtic folksiness quality to the song. Throw on top of that Linus' dark rich vocals, the song was very wonderfully balanced and just hits the soul in the right spot. Even just listening to the sound of it without paying attention to the word made me reflect on something within, though what that something is I don't even know.
I heard a couple more song after but I couldn't sit through the entire concert as he started a little late and I had to catch another concert that I was invited to. But I definitely would love to hear more of his voice and his songs.
And thank goodness I finally found someone who doesn't play every song to the metronome on purpose, mixes up the rhythm and pattern a little and doesn't even sing on pitch on purpose and tries to create a different kind of a soundscape. So I would definitely recommend Linus to anyone who is looking for something just a little different, a little darker, but still close enough home to be comfortable in.
